Servers and Systems: Data-Storage Product Roundup

Storage Server

Equipped with an 800-MHz CPU and 512-MB RAM, the four-bay Disk Station DS408 is capable of housing up to 4 TB of storage in a range of disk configurations, including basic, JBOD, and RAID 0, 1 and 5. Running off Gigabit Ethernet, the DS408 includes two USB 2.0 ports to attach a shared printer, external hard drive or USB-capable uninterruptible power supply.

AJAX adoption allows responsive interfaces, including wizards, drag/drop and quick search. Energy saving features include user-specified power preferences, scheduled power on/off support and low power consumption of 40 watts under normal operation. The DS408 also functions as a digital video recorder, allowing users to record video from IP cameras attached to the same network. -- Synology

NAS Server

The 5-TB, five-bay TS-509 Pro Turbo NAS is powered by a 1.6-GHz Intel Celeron CPU and 1-GB DDRII memory. Dual Gigabit LAN ports can be configured as failover, load balancing or to serve two different subnets. The RAID protection feature guards information assets and enables secure data sharing over the network, while encrypted remote replication and backup to external devices provide extra data protection.

All server functions can be shared among users of different platforms. The scheduled power on/off and wake on LAN features allow IT administrators to flexibly manage the NAS server's up time and wake up the NAS in the local network remotely. -- QNAP Systems

Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage

The Dell/EMC CX family of storage systems with multiprotocol flexibility and scalability offers four models of storage arrays that can be configured with both 4-gigabit Fibre Channel (FC) and 1-gigabit iSCSI ports. As new technologies emerge, new I/O modules can be added, such as 8-gigabit FC and 10-Gigabit Ethernet. The CX4-120 accommodates 120 FC or SATA disk drives, connections for up to 128 servers and six I/O slots. The...
